While the rest of the Greek world fell under Ottoman rule, Corfu’s unique status as a Venetian fortress allowed it to act as a bridge where Western artistic humanism and Eastern spiritual preservation could safely intertwine.

When Constantinople fell in 1453, the development of classical, secular, and evolving religious art across mainland Greece ground to a halt under Ottoman rule.

Corfu remained firmly under the flag of the Republic of Venice for over 400 years (1386–1797).

Because Corfu repelled catastrophic Ottoman sieges, it remained a safe zone where European intellectual movements could freely cross the sea.
